ADMIRALTY UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA COMMISSIONS A 100% INTERNALLY FABRICATED FOOT-PEDALLED HAND-WASHING MACHINE

The Vice Chancellor and President of the Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN), Ibusa Ogwashi-Uku Delta State, Professor Paul Omojo Omaji, on Thursday 7th, May 2020 commissioned a hand washing machine to help curb the spread of COVID-19. The machine project is to encourage healthy living through frequent washing of hands, as staff and visitors come to the University following the partial lifting of lockdowns.

The device, installed at the University gate and christened ‘VISA INTO ADUN COUNTRY’, is intended for use by every visitor to, or returning member of the University community. This, in addition to an infrared temperature check at the gate, is part of the now established mandatory protocols before access is allowed into the University Campus.

The Vice Chancellor was amazed at the zeal and talents of the staff of the University who rose up to the task of executing the project within a week of giving them the marching order.  “Corona Virus has helped us to bring out magnificent talents from among our staff. There are many more of such talents among you… You don’t wait for people to challenge you to optimize the talents that God has buried inside you; no, you don’t wait”. I see in you greater things than what you are now doing; hence my persistence in pulling you up to reach the best you can be, as we pursue the vision of the University, he said.

The Acting Registrar, Mr. Kingsley Aduga noted in his remarks that “even though the Engineering & Technology Faculty of the University is yet to commence, this product of ADUN shows that there are great potentials in us which can be harnessed for the betterment of the University community and the nation at large.”

Shedding light on the invention, WOSN Ikechukwu IJ of the University Medical Unit (Nigeria Navy) said, “the machine is fully fabricated by members of the University, and the materials used to complete the project were all locally sourced.” “The idea”, he said, “was inspired by the VC’s challenge to the Medical Team and Facilities Management Team of the University to come up with a Hand Washing Machine that can help in the fight against COVID-19 before students and staff return fully to campus”. The resulting machine can dispense liquid detergent and water without manual contact, as it is designed for pedal operation.

The ceremony, was attended by Deans, Heads of Departments and other members of Staff of the University.

In a brief press interview after the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor thanked the Proprietors of the University, who have been very supportive to ensure that the University is marching on to higher heights. He noted that the University has sustained academic activities, online, during the ongoing COVID-19 induced break by engaging students with lectures on a variety of electronic platforms including Zoom, Google Classroom, etc. These are yielding good results.

Admiralty University of Nigeria, a Global University Educating Luminary Leaders (GUELL), is the first Public Private Partnership University in Nigeria, jointly owned by the Nigerian Navy and Hellenic Education Nigeria.
