A FACULTY LIBRARY PROVIDES SPECIALIZED SERVICES FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

When many people think of university libraries, what comes to their mind is a big building located somewhere strategic or central in the university, filled with books and quiet spaces to study. Even though that’s not far from the truth, it is only part of the picture, because there is another often overlooked component that makes university libraries important, and it is the Faculty Library.

At Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN), a Faculty Library is not just created for extension sake, but our faculty libraries are integrated with the main library and equipped to deliver the same level of services the user community enjoys when they visit the main library. One peculiar thing about a faculty library is that the collections are tailored to the peculiar needs of each of the academic programmes in that faculty.

The Role of a Faculty Library in Academic Success

The purpose of a Faculty Library is to provide better library services and bring information resources closer to the people who need them. By default, faculty libraries are located in the buildings of their respective Faculties to make sure that those who need the resources the library holds are closer to them. According to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), academic libraries play a crucial role in supporting teaching, learning, and research by providing access to information resources and services that are essential for academic success (ACRL, 2016). Ideally, a faculty library collects and organize subject-based materials, provide specialized services and dedicated spaces that align closely with the curriculum and research needs of the faculties where they are located. In an event where students or lecturers are unable to access the main library perhaps due to distance, faculty libraries become the backbone for the respective departments. In some institutions, you find out that the main library is decentralized and faculty libraries empowered to encourage deeper research and closely support lecturers in their teaching endeavours.

At Admiralty University of Nigeria, our University Library remains the central hub that services these faculty libraries. The efforts of the technical service Librarians and visionary leadership of our University Librarian, Dr. (Mrs.) G.N. Onyia are extremely instrumental in ensuring that the overall library objectives are achieved and support for research and learning activities are provided.

The Faculty of Law Library

For over four years, the Faculty of Law (FOL) Library at ADUN has been a great support system to law students and lecturers. The state-of-the-art Library is equipped with an extensive collection of legal texts, journals, and case law reports. It also provides the basic tools as well as access to scholarly databases for legal research and study. The library's serene environment and professional staff provide guidance for students regarding their academic work. FOL Library has now become a model for other faculties in the institution.

The Faculty of Science Library

We are pleased to announce that the Faculty of Science (FOS) Library is now operational and ready to serve the scientific faculty at ADUN. While the work at the Library is improving to be at same standard with the FOL Library, there is a comprehensive collection of both science related texts and journals across various programmes in the faculty. From computer to Biology, and then to cybersecurity books, students and faculty can now have access to the materials they need to excel in their studies and research at a conducive Library closer to them.

What about our Faculty Librarians

In a Family, people often say ‘behind every successful man is a woman’. That can also be reflected in the libraries at Admiralty University of Nigeria. Behind every successful faculty library in ADUN, there is a team of dedicated librarians who are passionate about supporting academic excellence of both students and scholars in the University. It is easy to think that what they do is just to take care of books, these professionals do more. Librarians are academics, and they play huge roles  as educators and researchers. The Librarians at the University and Faculty libraries at ADUN do so much in assisting students in developing critical information literacy skills, guiding them on how to source for and use resources (both print and online). We are all growing daily

The success and growth of any faculty library would not be possible without the vision of the main institution’s library. For instance, the Library management system, which is accessible at the various faculty libraries are integrated with the main library. As we continue to expand and enhance our library services, and trust the firm support of the university management in establishing more faculty libraries at the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences (FAMSS), Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, and Faculty of Maritime Studies, we invite students and faculty members to explore and use these facilities and resources. Let us consciously be driven by the motto of our institution: ‘excellence in education’ and build an academic community grounded in knowledge and research.
