Admiralty University of Nigeria, Ibusa Delta State celebrated its 2025 Library Week with a hybrid event centered on the library’s evolving role in academic pursuits, knowledge preservation, and national development.
The physical program, held at the main Library's Collaboration Zone, featured music, cultural exhibitions, and presentations from dignitaries, including messages from the Vice Chancellor and Emeritus Professor Augustine, a keynote address by Dr. F. Abutu, and remarks by the University Librarian, Dr. Gladys N. Onyia. The core discussions focused libraries for cultural heritage and how technology has increased library accessibility while addressing resource limitations and the significance of maintaining cultural heritage.
The event, which included a library tour and
presentations on librarians' efforts to document cultural heritage, saw over
twenty virtual Zoom attendees, notably NLA President Dr. Lawal Umar, Professor
Emeritus Augustine Esogbue, Dr. Oyelude, and students from the Department of
Library and Information Science, Sikiru Adetona College of Education Science
and Technology, Omu-Ajose, among others.
The programmed was moderated by Mr Emuesiri Etagbedavwe, CLN.
The Vice Chancellor
of the University, Professor Christopher B.N. Ogbogbo delivered the opening
address where he stressed that libraries and librarians are key stakeholders for
national development. He thereafter wished all librarians in Nigeria a happy
celebration.
A keynote address on the theme was delivered by Dr. Freeman R. Abutu, a lecturer of the department of History and International Studies.
He defined culture as
the total disposition of a group of people and libraries as structures housing
books and artefacts for research consultation. Dr. Abutu highlighted the
library's role in preserving cultural heritage through collection,
organization, and accessibility of information. He also discussed challenges
such as resource and personnel shortages that hinder effective cultural
heritage preservation in libraries. He concluded by highlighting the need for
the library to leverage technology for digital preservation of resources which
will make the resources more accessible and democratized.
Tour of the Library Facilities
The University Librarians Dr Gladys Onyia delivered a brief remark on some of the services the library offers, thereafter she a tour of the facilities starting from the Circulation division where she talked about our online registration process of users, the Online Public Access Catalogue, the displays/mini exhibition.
The team proceeded to the Collections Development Service,
Technical Services Division, E-library and Open access (Print Library). At the
various sections, the heads are asked to explain what services are carried out,
and thereafter we converged at the Collaboration Zone (meeting venue) for a
comments, question and answer session from attendees both online and physically
present. Notable among those that call in for comments was the Professor
Emeritus Augustine Esogbue who called from the United States to commend the
effort and a wonderful event, congratulating all Nigerian Librarians on the
library Week Celebration. Thereafter vote of thanks was given by Mr George
Onwueme thereafter the event came to a close.
Conclusion
We
are indeed happy to have been part of the library week celebration. The
celebration was well carried out, meaningful and impactful. We sincerely
appreciate our Vice Chancellor for the support, the encouragement and support
of all heads of Sections, technical and media team, and staff of the library.
We also congratulate the library community and specially recognise and
appreciate all participants for their time and engagement.
