NEW LEGAL RESEARCH RESOURCE AVAILABLE AT ADUN LIBRARY

Nigerian Weekly Law Reports (NWLR) Online is now available!

The Emeritus Professor Augustine Esogbue (ADUN) Library is pleased to announce that the University has subscribed to the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports (NWLR) Online, providing the University community, particularly students and lecturers in the Faculty of Law with access to an important resource for Nigerian legal research.

This subscription was made possible through the support of the University Management, under the leadership of our Vice Chancellor, Prof. C.B.N Ogbogbo, and the guidance of Cdr AE Ameobi, the University Librarian.

NWLR provides access to reported decisions of Nigeria's appellate courts, including decisions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. The reports have been published continuously since 1985 and have become an important source for researching Nigerian case law.

How can it help your academic work?

Let’s say you’re carrying out a research around fundamental rights, contract, constitutional law, evidence, land law, criminal law, company law or another area of Nigerian law.

Instead of relying only on textbooks or general internet searches only, you can use NWLR to:

• Find reported Nigerian cases relevant to your research topic.
• Examine how courts have interpreted and applied legal principles.
• Trace authorities cited in judicial decisions.
• Find cases that support or challenge an argument you are developing.
• Strengthen assignments, seminar papers, moot court preparation, dissertations and project work with relevant case authorities.

For example, if your research concerns whether a particular legal principle has been accepted or developed by Nigerian courts, searching the relevant subject or case can take you directly to reported judicial decisions and the authorities discussed in them. And this is actually helpful when writing legal arguments: you wont just be saying "the law says..." you will be able to identify and examine the judicial authority behind the proposition.

While we already have some print copies/back issues of these reports in the Faculty Library, the database credentials have been activated on the computers at both the Faculty of Law Library and the University Main Library.

Students and lecturers may now visit either location and explore the resource.

Librarians in the Digital Services Division (DSD) are also available to assist users who need guidance with accessing and searching the database.
