The University Library and ICT Unit organized a 1-Day Public Webinar tagged: Rising Beyond Fake News Amidst Post COVID-19 Crisis, and a 2 Days Digital Skills Workshop for Educators and Administrators on 4th, 7th and 9th of September, 2020 at the University Library.

Public Webinar: Rising Beyond Fake News Amidst Post COVID-19 Crisis.
Prof. Paul Omojo Omaji (VC, ADUN) in his opening remarks at the Public Webinar noted that so many people have acted on different types of information to their detriment as a result of the spread of fake news accentuated by COVID-19. In his words, “For leadership, you must have trustworthy information to base your decisions upon, otherwise you will not succeed. Because of our commitment to raising Luminary Leaders, we are so fascinated to be able to engage the world in this area - knowing what constitutes fake news, where they come from, how they are constructed and how they are disseminated…” The sub topics treated during the webinar were: Impact of fake news in the Society by Mr. Omorodion Okuonghae (Samuel Adegboyega University); Fact Checking and Identification of Fake News By Mr. Blessing Amusan (Federal Polytechnic, Ede) and Combating Fake News: Our Responsibility By Mrs. Nkem Osuigwe (African Library and Information Associations and Institutions).
The webinar was moderated by Mr. Sylvester Ebhonu (Library Coordinator) with over 70 persons in attendance.
Digital Skills Workshop
The workshop was held physically at the e-section of the University library and streamed lived via ZOOM. Over 150 people (staff & the public) were in attendance, The topics treated during the workshop were: Digital Skills for Educators and Administrators by Mr. Sylvester Ebhonu (Library Coordinator, ADUN), Online Teaching/Learning Tools, E-presentations and Video Conferencing Skills by Mr. Musa Saheed Ibrahim (Faculty Examination Officer; FAS, ADUN) and Use of Common Microsoft Packages (MS Window, MS Word & MS Excel) by Mr. Victor Gbenga Lijoka (Deputy Director, ICT).
Impact
From the Feedback received from both ADUN Staff and Online Participants, the programme in an effective manner helped to:
- Inform ADUN Staff and the general public on fact checking and our responsibilities in combating the spread of fake news
- Equip participants with best and cost-effective digital tools and required skills for online teaching and course content creation
- Empowered Educators and Administrators with tools and skills to be more efficient and increase productivity in their respective workplaces.
The University Library and ICT team appreciates the Vice Chancellor for encouraging literacy programmes like this, which has positively impacted the University Community.
